June 1943:
- Tom Riddle opens the Chamber of Secrets, petrifying Muggle-born students and killing Myrtle Warren.
- Tom Riddle gathers followers to be later known as Death Eaters and begins to call himself Lord Voldemort in their company.
- Tom Riddle publicly declares himself Lord Voldemort.
- The First Wizarding War officially begins.
- The Order of the Phoenix, a secret society that opposes Voldemort, is founded by Albus Dumbledore.
- Voldemort and his Death Eaters commit acts of terrorism in Britain.
31 October 1981:
- Voldemort murders James and Lily Potter.
- Voldemort attempts to murder Harry Potter, but his spell rebounds and his body is destroyed.
- The Order of the Phoenix disbands.

4 June 1992:
- Harry Potter prevents Voldemort from stealing the Philosopher's Stone from Hogwarts.
- Professor Quirrell dies when Voldemort leaves his body.
- The Chamber of Secrets is opened and Muggle-born students are petrified and restored at the end of the school year.
- Sirius Black became the first known person to escape Azkaban.
- Sirius Black breaks into Hogwarts and slashes the portrait of the Fat Lady.
- Sirius Black breaks into the Gryffindor 3rd Year Boys' Dormitory but flees when Ron Weasley screams.
- Peter Pettigrew rejoins Voldemort and restores him to a rudimentary body.
- Sirius Black escapes from the Dementors.
- Voldemort murders Ministry of Magic employee Bertha Jorkins.
- Voldemort murders a Muggle, Frank Bryce.
- At the Quidditch World Cup, Death Eaters attack Muggles and the Dark Mark appears in the sky.
- Barty Crouch Jr kidnaps and disguises himself as Alastor Moody and begins to teach Defence Against the Dark Arts.
- Barty Crouch Jr manipulates the Goblet of Fire into choosing Harry Potter as a Triwizard Tournament champion.
- Barty Crouch Jr turns the Triwizard Cup into a Portkey.
- During the Third Task, the Portkey takes Harry Potter and Cedric Diggory to the Little Hangleton graveyard.
- Cedric Diggory is murdered under Voldemort’s command.
- Voldemort returns to full physical and magical strength.
- Harry escapes and returns Cedric's body to Hogwarts in front of the whole school.
- Barty Crouch Jr is captured and receives the Dementor’s Kiss.
- The Order of the Phoenix re-forms.
- The Ministry of Magic denies Voldemort's return and claims Cedric died in an accident during the Third Task.
- The Ministry of Magic and The Daily Prophet attempt to discredit and slander Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter, and anyone who allies with them.
- Voldemort builds forces without interference and gains the strengths of giants, Dementors, and werewolves.
- Dumbledore’s Army, a secret organization of students learning and practicing defensive magic is formed.
- The Ministry of Magic loses control over the Dementors.
- Death Eaters escape from Azkaban to rejoin Voldemort.
- Voldemort is sighted in the Atrium at the Ministry of Magic following his attempt to steal the prophecy from the Department of Mysteries.
- Voldemort's return is publicly announced.
- Death Eaters commit acts of terrorism in Britain.
- The wizarding community loses trust and confidence in the Ministry of Magic.
- Minister for Magic Cornelius Fudge is dismissed from office for denying Voldemort's return instead of tightening security and preparing the wizarding community for war.
- Parents begin to withdraw their children from Hogwarts, preferring to keep families together in times of war.
- Draco Malfoy brings Death Eaters to Hogwarts through a Vanishing Cabinet in the Room of Requirement.
- Dumbledore is slain by a killing curse performed by Severus Snape.
- Muggle Studies Professor Charity Burbage writes an article for the Daily Prophet in favour of Muggle-borns.
- She is kidnapped by Death Eaters and murdered under Voldemort's command.
27 July 1997:
- Alastor Moody is killed by Voldemort when the Order of the Phoenix attempts to move Harry Potter from the Dursley Home at 4 Privet Dr.
- Voldemort quietly takes control of the Ministry of Magic.
- High-ranking Ministry officials are placed under the Imperius Curse.
- Minister for Magic Rufus Scrimgeour is assassinated.
- Pius Thickness is placed under the Imperius Curse and installed as Minister for Magic as Voldemort's puppet.
- The Muggle-born Registration Commission is set up by the Ministry of Magic.
- Muggle-borns are forced to turn themselves in or be captured, after which they are sent to Azkaban and/or stripped of their wands.
- Some Muggle-borns go into hiding, and some are caught and killed by Death Eaters or Snatchers.
- Pure and half-bloods with pro-Muggle ideals are kept on surveillance or arrested as blood traitors.
- Voldemort takes control of Hogwarts.
- Attendance becomes mandatory for all pure and half-blood students.
- Muggle-borns are no longer allowed to attend Hogwarts.
- Snape is appointed Headmaster.
- Death Eaters Alecto and Amycus Carrow come to teach Muggle Studies (now compulsory) and Dark Arts (replacing Defence Against the Dark Arts).
- Students are taught illegal curses and are ordered to perform them on students in detention.
- Other severe forms of punishment are used.
- Members of Dumbledore's Army hide from Snape and the Death Eaters in the Room of Requirement.
- The Secret Passage leading to the Hog's Head Inn is created in the Room of Requirement.
- Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger return to Hogwarts to search for one of Voldemort's Horcruxes.
- Voldemort and his Death Eaters arrive.
- The professors set defensive spells and charms around Hogwarts.
- The Order of the Phoenix, Aurors, and other magical adults arrive to fight against Voldemort and the Death Eaters.
- Students 17 or older are allowed to stay and fight.
- Students under the age of 17 are ordered to evacuate, though many defy orders and remain behind.
- The Hogwarts defenders fend off the Death Eaters with many casualties on both sides, including Harry, Ron, and Hermione.
- Voldemort is defeated.
- The surviving Death Eaters are captured.
- The Second Wizarding War ends.

1998:
- The Muggle-born Registration Commission ends.
- The Ministry of Magic begins to reform.
CTS Timeline
September 1998 - June 1999:
- Hogwarts closes for this school year.
- Hogwarts re-opens with all new staff.
- Less than half of the students return.
- Few house-elves return.
- Professors teach multiple subjects due to short staffing.
- Aurors are hired to guard the school and grounds.
- Hogwarts population increases with each passing year.
- The 2005-2006 school year begins with almost a full roster of staff and students.
- The house-elf population is now at half capacity.
- A Boggart is released at the Great Lake, causing a massive fire.
- The fire spreads across the grounds and part of the Forbidden Forest burns down and its creatures are displaced.
- The fire reaches Hogsmeade and damages buildings.
- The Boggart reappears in Hogsmeade and terrorizes villagers until it is banished.
