History

Family and Early Life
The scion of a wealthy pure-blood family, Thaddeus traces his ancestry to the magical branch of the medieval Egerton baronetcy. Growing up in the lap of luxury, he and his two younger siblings never wanted for anything. They were surrounded by material comforts and numerous dedicated servants who waited on them faithfully. Their emotional needs were not neglected either: the Egertons left the day-to-day running of their business interests to their loyal subordinates, and were able to spend much of their time bonding with their children.

As the eldest child, Thaddeus was groomed to take over his father’s empire, and when the time comes he would be required to shoulder the heavy responsibility of taking care of each and every one of his subordinates. From a young age, his father often brought him along for his official engagements, where he was expected to play the role of the obedient son. He found little joy in attending these social functions, but nonetheless he performed them diligently so that he would not disappoint his father.

He did manage to find a refuge from his duties; his father was an avid equestrian and owned a number of handsome Granian winged horses. When Thaddeus was five he began to learn how to ride – and eventually care for – winged horses. As a result, he began to grow closer to his father over the years.

Conversely, Thaddeus always felt that there was a rift between him and his younger siblings. In accordance to the family’s traditions, as the firstborn he was to inherit the lion’s share of the family’s fortunes. This practice ensured that the main line of the Egerton family would always remain strong, though this was at the expense of its branches. For that reason he suspected that his younger siblings resented him for benefitting from the arrangement simply by virtue of being the firstborn, and thus he had always distanced himself emotionally from them.

Hogwarts
Thaddeus began his formal education at Hogwarts in 2001. Like most other Egertons before him, he was sorted into Hufflepuff – his family’s strong emphasis on the importance of loyalty, as well as the fealty they expected of their subordinates, all but guaranteed that outcome. Upon learning of his prestigious background, some of the children of his father’s associates and subordinates – including some of those whom he had already met at the social functions he was forced to attend as a child – attempted to cozy up to him. His aloofness did little to deter them, however, and soon he found himself the unwilling leader of his own posse. Eventually he decided to play along, humouring them and pretending to revel in the attention he received from them. Secretly, however, he lamented how he would probably never find a true friend at Hogwarts, and from time to time he would slip out to one of his many secret spots in the extensive school grounds to enjoy some peace and quiet and to clear his mind.

Academically, Thaddeus generally did well in most of his subjects. In particular, he excelled in Charms, Care of Magical Creatures and Herbology. His aptitude for the latter two subjects surprised many who did not expect the scion of an influential family to be so comfortable with the outdoors and willing to get his hands dirty. In reality, Thaddeus enjoyed those subjects because, unlike people, magical beasts and plants didn’t care about his background and would treat him like any other ordinary human. A flower wouldn’t blossom for him to get into his good graces, nor would a beast refrain from attacking him when mishandled because he was rich and powerful. Such honesty and unpretentiousness were, to Thaddeus, a breath of fresh air that he could not find anywhere else, and appreciated very much.

Starting His Fifth Year
In the past, Thaddeus had largely resigned himself to fate, believing that he would simply follow the path in life that his parents had paved for him: study hard and graduate, learn the ropes of managing the family’s business empire from his father, settle down and start a family with a girl from an illustrious family, and groom his firstborn to continue his legacy.

Increasingly though, he’s feeling that it isn’t quite the right way to lead his life, but at the same time he has not a clue what he wants either.

Personality
At first glance, Thaddeus is not the snobbish, rich brat that many expected him to be. He’s amiable, quite gentlemanly, and doesn’t seem to let things like blood status and background colour his views of others… until one gets to know him better. As a result of his family’s aristocratic roots and his upbringing, he believes that it is his birthright and obligation to take care of those who are less privileged, so much so that he sometimes comes across as though he’s forcing his unwanted and misplaced kindness onto others. So cloistered within his ivory tower is he that he truly does not understand why others would be so stubborn and ungrateful when he’s just trying to be nice and charitable.

Beneath all of that is a very lonely boy who has never had someone whom he can consider a true friend. (Nor does he know how to befriend anyone properly, although he remains oblivious to this fact.) He believes that none of his friends truly care about him and only associate with him because of his wealth and status, and that they would all abandon him in a heartbeat should his family’s fortunes suddenly change. The closest person to him is his father, who is ironically the very person he does not wish to eventually become, and will therefore not be able to comprehend his troubles and worries.
