The best class (Davi)

Post by Colette Descoteaux »

If there was a class better suited than Divination to lose herself to a vision, then Colette had yet to hear of it. Given her gift and talent as a seer, it surprised no one that Divination happened to be her favourite class. Her inner eye had been open for as long as she could remember, though she would have preferred to not be lost in a vision of a potential vision since she loved listening to what the professor had to say. The young woman was small and slender, with curly dark brown hair and deep brown eyes. She lay slumped in an armchair, eyes closed only for them to abruptly snap open. She sat up, seemingly confused as she fumbled for some parchment and a quill. However just before the tip of quill reached the ink bottle she paused and gave a start.

There were no other students, the class had vanished. She wondered where the rest of the class now was, what was the time and most importantly, hoped that the professor had not become mad with her. To those who's eyes remained closed, she may have appeared to be asleep. She glanced about for her professor, hastily attempting to both write down what she saw and offer her deepest apologies. "Professor je suis désolée." Colette started to explain before realizing she had fallen into her native tongue. At least she no longer wore the uniform of her former school. It was one thing to stand out as a new student amongst gangs of friends, but another thing entirely to be dressed completely different to everyone. "I... I didn't mean to... I... I was not sleeping I had another vision." She hastened to explain, writing rapidly, trying to recall the details exactly as they were.

As much as he loved his work, it was hard slogging through the day to day bits especially with so many who had zero interest in divination but only took the class because it was required either due to their future job choices or their parents desires. The bright spots of his days were the few and far between students who flourished in his class and took it to heart. Like the one he was currently watching who appeared to be sleeping but Davi knew better, he knew a vision trance when he saw one and when the time for them to change classes had come he’d ushered the others out quietly.

Sending word to her next Professor about what was going on and promising once he was sure she was recovered he’d send her along, but he wasn’t about to disturb her it could end badly. He’d poured her a glass of water, sat it on his desk, settled into his chair for a bit and waited; but he couldn’t sit still so he’d busied himself straightening up the classroom before he heard her come back to herself fumbling and scrambling at her spot. Grabbing the glass of water he wandered over pausing when she spoke and he shook his head, “No need to apologize Colette.” Nodding absently he stood next to her watching her as she quickly began to write down whatever it was she’d seen but he wasn’t focusing on her writing, he was focusing on her.

“ I know the difference between visions and sleeping… one usually involves snoring.” He teased a little hoping to break the sort of frenzied energy she was operating under before he offered the glass of water giving her a little smile. Davi had read her file, where she’d come from and of course the information provided about her abilities and skills thus far so he’d more or less expected it from her. There were a select handful he knew would flourish in his class, others that did well tended to be happy surprises for him.

“Does this happen often?” If she was often having random bouts of vision trances it might be something they needed to address. It was a gift yes but it needed control so it didn’t interrupt her life like it sort of was currently. Thankfully at least here there was time to work on it before they went out into the world and it really affected their lives.

Fortune seemed to be smiling on her for Professor Baptiste appeared to understand. Who else in the school might understand better than the teacher responsible for divination? Reassured by his gentle words, Colette slowed the pace in which she was writing down what she had seen. "Merci Professor." She responded, growing visible more calm. The young woman smiled at his teasing comment before accepting the glass of water gratefully. "Thank you." Colette said before taking a long drink from the glass and exhaling with relief. "You are correct there." She agreed with him on the difference between a vision and someone asleep. How anyone could fall asleep in divination was utterly inconceivable to her. Surely even those who's eye remained closed found it fascinating?

Colette swallowed, setting her quill down before answering the question. She looked a little sheepish as she nodded the once. "Oui, sometimes a few times a week or even a day, but more commonly once a month." Colette did not lie to him nor try to conceal the truth of her abilities. He, alone of all the teachers at Hogwarts would be able to relate to her the most. "I don't always... I... See correctly what I am seeing. Sometimes only after I have seen it a few times can I begin to make sense of it." She added on quietly, though she paled at one particular memory. "Though I foresaw my own death as a result of flying when I was at Beauxbatons so I've not played Quidditch or been near a broom since." That particular vision had been more than enough to ground her indefinitely, much to the disappointed of her team and she suspected the disappointment of Ravenclaw and their Hogwarts Quidditch team here.

"I... I didn't miss to much did I professor?" She inquired, sounding almost embarrassed, a worried expression forming on her face. Colette ran through her memory, she climbed the ladder to the divination class, sat down, took out her book and then... Then... She swallowed her throat feeling abruptly dry before taking a sip of water from the glass. She must have disappeared into her vision not long into the start of her class. This made her feel a mixture of sadness and guilt, as divination was her favourite class. No one needed to read the tea leaves to figure that one out. She hoped she would not fall prey to too many more visions in his classes in the future.

Listening as she answered his question he gave a thoughtful nod, it wasn’t too much but it was enough that he felt a note would need to be placed in her file for the other Professors. So long as they were made aware perhaps it wouldn’t affect her studies too badly at least until he could help her get it more under control anyway. When she continued on he nodded, “That tends to be how it works…” He didn’t miss how all the color faded from her face before she spoke more and he frowned, foresaw her own death?

That certainly didn’t sound right. It was incredibly rare to see such, even the best seers rarely saw their own fates to such a degree and what she described brought a brow to lift. “At Beauxbaton’s had you begun to learn interpreting visions and dreams yet?” He raised a brow at her giving her a soft, soothing smile as he continued, ”Quite often you see the things we see in visions aren’t precisely what they mean, their… well falling for example often signifies a loss of control and hitting the ground signifies a need to feel grounded..the irony there isn’t lost on me.”

Making his way over to his desk he leaned back against it folding his arm in front of him and twining his fingers together he continued, “It is incredibly rare for even the best seers to dream of their own demise, not that I am discounting your vision… but perhaps if you consider the timing of when you had it there was something else going on in your life that the vision could have been connected too?” When she asked her question he shook his head and chuckled. Given a wave of his hand towards the empty room he shrugged, “Most of them are catching up to you or barely skating by as it is, you didn’t miss much. But we do need to work on control… can’t have this happening in a class where it might cause you harm.”

He meant that sincerely and of course he knew it was possible to learn to control it, not entirely of course she’d always have visions that popped up on their own. But there were methods to at least help her recognize when one was coming and prepare, so she wouldn’t be caught off guard or could at least let her Professor know before it hit. Davi was seriously considering perhaps an afterschool program if possible for the more gifted students in his classes, where they could be around others with like minds and get practice, extra insight. It was worth considering and discussing with the Headmaster. Focusing his attention fully back on her his head tilted to one side, “What did you see this time? If you don’t mind me asking.”

She nodded quickly. "Yes, oui I... It can be... Erm what's the term? Frustrating? Oui frustrating for me." Colette added on, seeing the same visions repeatedly combined with her making limited to no headway with them was a grating experience. Hence why she tried to write as many of them down as possible, so she might be able to see the deeper meaning in them as the visions or dreams continued.

"Oui professor... Though I admit I was not always accurate as I would have preferred." She was highly receptive to such things, the talent having manifested in her at a very young age. Her father always told her that her mother would have been thrilled had she lived. Colette nodded slowly in understand, though uncertainty mixed with fear flickered in her brown eyes. "It was horrible." She admitted with tiny shudder. Before the vision, Colette had been a skilled chaser and a massive lover of flight. Since it, Colette had never flown having vowed to never do so ever again.

"Yes professor that is what my old professor said too." Though it was clear Colette had no immediate intention of going anywhere near a broomstick, even if Ravenclaw needed players. "Let me think... There was a ball and an important Quidditch game coming up... Plus my father was considering a new career opportunity." She said quietly, trying to cast her mind back to the time the vision first arrived. Colette looked relieved to hear that she had not missed much, but there was no mistaking her pleased smile about his opinion of the class in regards to her abilities. "Oui I find control to be... Difficult." The young woman answered honestly, there was no point in attempting to conceal the truth, even if she wanted to. He would know as he happened to teach the subject. "You are right, I don't want this happening in a defense against the dark arts class." She added on quickly. It was her worst class by far and her least favourite to boot.

She wished it were possible to drop the subject in favor of extra divination but knew such a dream would never be allowed to happen. Defending herself against the dark arts was a crucial aspect to staying safe.

Colette glanced down at her notes before answering him. "I do not mind professor. But... It was confusing. There was a silver disk, as if it were the moon on still water. A strange black shape that howled and a voice though I could not quite make out what it was saying... I..." She pursed her lips, as she struggled to recall any more details or figure out what it meant. "I'm sorry professor I cannot say anymore... I don't think I've seen this one before." She sounded disappointed as if she wished to be able to provide him with a wealth of details.

He nodded as she responded to his question. It sounded as if there were plenty of other things going on that her vision could have been hinting at her feeling a loss of control over. Still he chose not to push it, let her come to that realization on her own she would in time. When she confirmed she did find having control to be difficult Davi made a little affirmative noise, “It takes practice and learning control which you can get here with lessons of course.”

Yes, some extra classes would certainly do some good for her and a handful of others. Her mention of DADA class made him shiver absently, most assuredly not a place she needed to go into a vision for any reason. When she began to explain her vision his head tilted one way and then the other as he looked thoughtful and he shook his head when she apologized, “It’s alright, no apology necessary. Something that vague it isn’t wise to try to put together until you’ve seen more and understand the meaning behind what you’re being shown. As it stands at face value one would assume you’re having visions of werewolf.”

While such could be likely given the current standings of things in the Magical world, Davi wasn’t going to bet on it entirely, least of all at the school. Even though he’d heard there was a werewolf among the staff, he didn’t think it a concern, the Headmaster wouldn’t allow such if he didn’t trust the individual in question implicitly. Wandering over to her he reached out gently patting her shoulder, “Finish your water and take a few moments to recover yourself, then I’ll escort you to your next class. I already sent word to your Professor that I would and I am a man of my word.”

They could talk more as they walked but he figured getting her up and moving once she’d recovered a bit more would go a long way to help in clearing her mind of the vision for now and shelving it for later. He didn’t have another class yet so he had the time to do so and he honestly didn’t mind, making his way over to his desk he picked up a quill and wrote out a quick note to take with them so he wouldn’t have to verbally interrupt the Professor when he did drop her.

"That is what they said at Beauxbatons." She answered agreeably, the only way to understand her abilities, master them and see as clearly as possible with her inner eye was to train, to study, to learn. "But I hope to be as accomplished a seer as my great great Grandmother. She was the last seer in my family before myself." Indeed, many within the line had come to the incorrect conclusion that the ability had long since died out, gone with the last member who possessed it. Until Colette was born and started displaying the signs of a seer.

She smiled, pleased that he found himself able to accept her apology. "Sacre bleu." Colette whispered to herself, hoping the visions were not about a werewolf. With difficulty she clamped down on the thought, relying on such a concept as the basis of interpretation would taint any attempt to understand it further or her grasp on any similar visions. A wolf, might be a dog, a howl could belong to all manner of animals after all, each of which may mean a vastly different thing.

Colette smiled up at him. "Merci professor." She replied, happy to spend more time in the company of her favourite professor from her favourite subject. "At least with you there is no chance of me getting lost along the way." She added on after a moment of thought. The castle happened to be very confusing, with Colette regularly getting lost at least once every two weeks so far. She finished the rest of the water and stood up, slowly collecting her various things. "I'm ready." Colette informed him, sling her bag over her shoulder. It was clear from the light in her eyes that she would have much preferred to remain in divination, working and studying here. She may have been the first to arrive, but she usually was among the very last of her classmates to leave.

He nodded, pleased to hear that she’d at least heard it before, at least it meant she was serious about pursuing her gift. When she continued a brow lifted and he held up a hand flashing a smile at her, “Don’t limit yourself… and don’t let others limit you either.” He chuckled at her comment as he went about making sure he’d put away everything he felt needed to be before he noticed her stand up out of the corner of his eye and he nodded. “Very well then, let’s be on our way then.”

Allowing her to head out of the classroom first, he followed and sighed heavily brushing his hands off against one another before he shoved them into his pockets walking at a rather casual pace. “Are there any signs you’ve noticed that you are going into a vision? Tell’s I mean, might help you to learn to recognize them so you aren’t caught off guard.” And even if she didn’t have any now it was a good thought to put in her head. She could think about it and find things to help herself recognize when a vision was coming on to be useful later on.

The hallway was relatively quiet; most were either in their next class, on their way elsewhere or too caught up in their own heads to pay much attention as they passed. Davi had sort of become used to it, compared to home it was a nice change of pace to coast under the radar at school. He hadn’t missed her comment about getting lost either and he absently scratched at the ponytail he held his hair back with, “I do have to say though you are in fact just very lucky I know the way to your next class… I am still learning how to navigate the school myself after all.” He hoped that would at least get a smile or laugh out of her to let her leave the rest of whatever tension she might still be carrying behind her. All her attention really needed to be on what was ahead, not what was behind her; it was the best advice he’d ever received.

"Oui I shall try my best to prevent both professor." She told him eagerly, before quickly double checking she managed to pack everything away. It would not do to arrive at her next class missing something that she forgot to pick up before leaving. No, everything had been packed. Good. "Yes, lets." Colette voiced her agreement, hoping she might not be too late for her next lesson.

Colette's brown furrowed as she thought about it, trying to recall if there were any hints which she may have noticed before the visions came. "Sometimes, my head hurts." She admitted quietly. "Others my vision starts to blur at the edges and I see glimpses of things which are not there." The student answered somewhat cryptically. "Others I feel my thoughts start to slow as if I'm wading through thick mud or treacle. I... It is hard to explain in words." The seeress protested, though if any member of the Hogwarts teaching staff might understand, it would be him.

"Ah that is most fortunate." Colette grinned up at him. There were worse fates than getting lost with her favourite professor. If class did not end, she would never leave. It was the only place she truly felt as though she could be herself. A place where the mind opened, the inner eye expanded and the mysteries of the days yet to be might be glimpsed. How some of the students disliked divination tended to be beyond her understanding. It was the very best subject.
