History:
“Potentas Victas” Power Conquers. This is the family motto of the ancient line of Concord, a family line that stretches back all the way to the time of Merlin himself. More specifically to his arch-nemesis Morgana le Fey, arguably one of the most powerful dark witches in history. It would come as no surprise to anyone then that the family was steeped in darkness and deceit. Rumours abounded that the family practised the dark arts, seeking out and gathering a plethora of artefacts and scrolls in their personal library. However, despite the best attempts of many, no proof of either the family’s use of the dark arts, or the existence of the vault. To all outward appearances, the family appears to be a respected family, having produced many members of the Wizengamot and even a few Ministers of Magic in their day.

Behind that outward veil, another story waited. Where their peers became obsessed with the purity of their blood, the House of Concord went in a different direction. To them, all that mattered was the power and capability of an individual. The purity of your blood didn’t matter to them, only what you were capable of, what you had accomplished. The means didn’t matter, just the end result.

This was the family that Grace was born into, one obsessed with power and exploitation, with gaining knowledge and power. The youngest of three siblings the girl was always her mother’s favourite, the baby of the family, and while she was young would follow her around...while she was home that was. The truth was that her parents didn’t share a love marriage but rather one of convenience, both very dedicated to their careers and goals, which just happened to intercede. Grace’s mother was mostly absent at St Mungos, focused on her research and patients, it was Grace’s father who was mostly present in his children’s lives. Though, where her mother had empathy and softness, Arthur was nothing but hard edges. From an early age, he made his children compete for his attention and approval, pitting them against one another. Success was expected and failure was punished harshly in all aspects of their lives.

It wasn’t that they weren’t praised, but rather that they had to struggle hard to achieve a nod of praise, let alone that full-throated support that their peers received from their parents. Grace understood this during her junior recital, where she performed a violin solo that brought her praise from her teachers and other parents. But when her eyes settled on her father he turned away, telling her later that “Your sister was better.” That was the moment she realised that he wouldn’t ever be like other parents but when she brought it up with her sister she was told that it was because he expected better from them.

Nothing she seemed to do from that time was ever good enough, constantly compared to her superstar sister Grace tried so hard to gain her father’s approval. She signed up for school clubs and spent hours studying to achieve the best grades she could but found herself always lacking. She couldn’t confide in her sister but...her brother was another matter. Growing up in the shadow of their sister all his life had left him dispirited with the family and their creed, so he proved to be a confidant to his little sister, the two bonding over a mutual love of flying. For a time at least.

When she was 9 Simon took a job as a clerk for the International Quidditch Association, something that he loved but that their father couldn’t comprehend as a possible career choice for one of his children, especially when Simon gave up a job clerking for the Minister of Magic to follow his passion. He was disowned, leaving Grace alone in the house, at the tender mercies of her father as she dreamed of escaping to Hogwarts, which had to be better from all the stories she’d been told. A haven for her to get her through the last few lonely years.

And it was.

She enjoyed the classwork, the chance to be out from under her parents' eyes and do the things she wanted to...to a point anyway.

Personality:

Grace is curious and driven, not exactly always a winning combination for her teachers as it’s just as likely to get her into trouble as it is to help her excel at her studies. She has an almost pathological need to do well and succeed, a result of her father’s attitude while she was growing up. She can’t help the competitive edge it fostered in her, need to not just do well but to be seen to be doing so well that it couldn’t be denied. Her history might lead one to believe that she would be a teacher’s pet, except from a young age her father had drilled two facts into her. The ends justify the means and power is all that’s important. She’s more likely to investigate a situation by herself than report it to a teacher. To see if she can turn it to her advantage before reverting to the way things are supposed to be done, calling in the authorities.

However, unlike her father, Grace isn’t a naturally cruel person, willing to throw anyone and everyone under the bus to get what she wants. She will do what is necessary to get what she wants but will try to find a solution that will prevent her from hurting innocents or those not involved. While she is capable and willing to manipulate and hurt those who are actively engaging her she won’t do the same to innocents unless there is no other choice. It is this trait that led her father and sister to view her as weak. While Grace isn’t a villain, she is far from a hero.

While the influence of her father runs deep, it is tempered by the influence of her brother. Grace is slow to trust and open herself up, to most people she’s bright and friendly and peppy but will say a lot without revealing too much. To those she trusts though, Grace is quieter and softer, the smile she reveals isn’t forced or larger than life, it’s genuine and real. She’s loyal to those she cares about and would move mountains for them, but beware the one who threatens or hurts them, for on them she will unleash all the lessons House Concord taught her.
