Family History
Alexander Innes and Carolyn Bell, both from long lines of pureblood families, became parents while still in their fifth year at Hogwarts. Their son, Dorian Alexander Innes, was born on 29 October 1975 and was left in the care of Alex’s parents for what was intended to be the remainder of their school years. Both families came from generational wealth and could have easily afforded to hire nannies, but Alex’s family, being very family-oriented, insisted on taking care of Dorian themselves. In contrast, Caro’s family was less understanding; displeased that she had become a parent so young, they distanced themselves from her. As a result, Caro moved in with Alex and his family for school holidays, where she was always welcomed.
After graduating from Hogwarts in June 1978, Alex and Caro eloped a week later, amidst the turmoil of the First Wizarding War. Eager to contribute to the war effort, they joined the Order of the Phoenix and began training as Aurors with the Ministry of Magic. For the next three years, their involvement in the war left little time for Dorian, who continued to live with his grandparents.
When Voldemort disappeared in October 1981, Alex had already lost both of his parents to the war, and Caro's family, having all but disowned her due to her teenage pregnancy, remained estranged. While Alex embarked on his career as a low-ranking Auror, Caro set aside her ambitions and stayed home to care for Dorian, who was now six years old.
Motherhood didn’t bring Caro the fulfilment she had expected, and the next five years were marked by dissatisfaction. While her career remained stalled, she watched as Alex advanced in his department, which only fueled her growing resentment. Her frustration deepened when she gave birth to their second son just a day after Dorian left for Hogwarts.
Early Life & Childhood
Born on 2 September 1987, Trent Dorian was named after his elder brother (a middle name he dislikes to this day). Only a few weeks later, Caro decided she was not suited to full-time parenting and returned to the Ministry of Magic. Without family to rely on, Alex and Caro decided to hire full-time caretakers for Trent. They chose to implement a rotating staff, fearing that Trent might grow too attached to a caregiver, just as they believed Dorian had become too distant from them after bonding with his grandparents during his early years.
While Alex and Caro were largely absent in both sons’ lives, their methods of parenting differed significantly. With Dorian, they remained distant yet overbearing, trying to mold him into their version of perfection through strict guidelines and high expectations. When this strategy backfired, they adopted an entirely different method with Trent. Instead, Trent was granted near-total freedom, growing up with few rules or expectations, and left largely to his own devices.
As both boys grew older, the emotional distance became undeniable. Alex and Caro were disheartened by their sons’ attitudes: Dorian’s open resentment and Trent’s quiet indifference. Unwilling to confront their failure as parents, they retreated even further, spending as little time at home as possible. Today, Dorian still carries the burden of his parent's expectations, feeling like he can never quite live up to their standards. Trent, on the other hand, feels no such pressure and remains wholly uninterested in meeting their approval.
Rather than perceiving his upbringing as neglectful, Trent simply accepted it as normal. It never occurred to him that his childhood was unusual; by the time he recognized that other families operated differently, with parents who were more present and engaged, he had already come to prefer the independence his childhood afforded him. The absence of rules or expectations suited him, and he spent much of his time outdoors or exploring the family grounds, finding his own ways to pass the time. He credits this freedom for shaping his self-sufficiency and teaching him to navigate life without relying on others emotionally.
Hogwarts, Years 1-5
Trent began Hogwarts in September 1999 and was placed into Slytherin. For the first five years, he was an apathetic student, attending classes he found interesting but neglecting others. His least favourite classes were ones that he didn't see value in; he had no interest in the study of magical history or the movements of planets, and he skipped them whenever he could. Not one to care much about his grades, Trent often found himself in detention. As he suffered no real repercussion to this unimpressive academic record - indeed, sometimes detention was preferable to class - he had little motivation to change.
It wasn’t until his mid-fifth year, after a conversation during Careers Advice, that Trent began to take his education more seriously. The idea of Curse-Breaking, with its potential for adventure, sparked his interest. He realized he would need certain O.W.L.s to continue pursuing this career path, and to the surprise of his teachers and classmates, Trent began attending class regularly and putting in more effort than the usual bare minimum. The subjects he didn’t need to continue for Curse-Breaking were neglected even more than before; Trent had no intention of continuing with them, and he was perfectly content to fail. Trent did well enough on his O.W.L.s (though he barely scraped an ‘E’ in Potions), which allowed him to continue with the required N.E.W.T. classes for his sixth year.
6th Year
When 1 September 2004 arrived, it marked the beginning of Trent’s sixth year at Hogwarts—but also the point when he effectively moved out of his family home, as he turned seventeen the very next day. Prior to this, Trent had always gone home for every holiday—not to visit his family, but for the freedom it afforded him. His parents were rarely home, and without their presence or rules, he could come and go as he pleased. Now that he was of age, Trent no longer felt obligated to return home during the holidays. Instead, he travelled, taking on odd jobs to support himself and avoiding the use of his family’s wealth.
Returning to Hogwarts after each holiday was a challenge for Trent. The independence he enjoyed during his travels made the school’s structure and rules feel even more limiting. Adjusting back to the daily routine of classes and curfews was frustrating, and he often found himself restless and distracted, longing for the freedom he experienced while away.
With his O.W.L.s behind him and his N.E.W.T.s still a year away, Trent slacked off, falling back into the habit of paying attention only to subjects that interested him and neglecting the rest. He took minimal notes and let his mind wander during classes he found dull, assuming that only material from his seventh year would be covered in his N.E.W.T.s. (It was a decision he would later regret, once he realized too late that the exams covered content from both his sixth and seventh years).
7th Year
Trent completed his sixth year, and in the summer he applied for an apprenticeship with Gringotts to follow his dream of becoming a Curse-Breaker. To his surprise, they accepted him, and Trent spent a few weeks shadowing a Curse-Breaker in Egypt. The experience was everything he had hoped for, reinforcing his belief that this was the career he was meant for. However, when the program ended, Trent learned that while Gringotts was satisfied with his skills, they were not impressed with his academic record and refused to offer him a full-time position until he had completed his N.E.W.T.s and obtained the necessary grades.
Trent is currently in his seventh and final year at Hogwarts, working to catch up on the material he neglected during his sixth year. Now eighteen years old, he finds school more stifling than ever and resents being treated like a child despite having been an adult for over a year. While he is determined to see his education through to the end, Trent is eager to move on and leave Hogwarts behind.
Trent maintains a distant, indifferent relationship with his family. Though he now recognizes the emotional neglect from his parents, he feels no resentment—only apathy. He keeps in minimal contact out of moral obligation, responding to their letters only when necessary (sometimes with extra prompting from their persistent owl) and rarely visiting them.
Trent’s relationship with his older brother, Dorian, is virtually nonexistent. With a twelve-year age gap, they never had the chance to bond; Dorian was away at Hogwarts during Trent’s childhood, and the rare times he was home for a holiday, he felt more like a babysitter than a brother. By the time Trent started at Hogwarts, Dorian had already begun his career as an Auror, and Trent—already wary of authority—struggles with the idea of his estranged brother being in a position of power over him and rebuffs any attempts at friendly conversation.
Personality
Trent is introverted, but not shy—when he chooses to engage, he is confident and capable—but he’s selective about when and with whom he invests his energy. With strangers or acquaintances, Trent is polite enough to avoid being perceived as rude, but his demeanour lacks warmth. He interacts with others out of courtesy rather than any desire to connect, keeping things civil without going out of his way to be friendly or affectionate.
Trent is reluctant to talk about himself and rarely opens up, which can make him hard to get to know. He finds silence more comfortable than idle conversation, often offering brief, one-word responses when more might be expected. His stoic and composed demeanor further complicates things, making it difficult for others to read him or understand what he’s really thinking or feeling.
While Trent may initially seem aloof, those who get close to him find a loyal, caring friend. He enjoys laughing, joking, and spending time with those he cares about, whether it’s talking or simply sitting in comfortable silence. He’s always there when it matters, offering help, listening attentively, and stepping in when needed. His presence is steady and genuine, and while he doesn’t always express his emotions, his actions clearly reflect his feelings.
Beyond his small circle of friends, Trent is largely indifferent; he has no interest in the drama of others, the conversations happening around him, or whether someone is breaking the rules. Unless it directly involves him or someone he cares about, Trent is content to dismiss it entirely.
Trent thrives when there’s no routine to follow, as he finds structure stifling. This restlessness can make him prone to breaking the rules, though he’s not rebellious for the sake of causing trouble. He simply hates restrictions—curfews, homework, and anything that feels like an imposition on his freedom.
Trent quickly picks up new concepts, but he excels in what genuinely interests him. He enjoys subjects such as Charms and DADA for their practical uses, and thrives in hands-on situations where he can experiment and apply what he learns. However, he struggles with subjects like Potions, where strict instructions test his patience and tendency to improvise, and theory-heavy subjects like Arithmancy lose his attention entirely.
Physical
Trent stands at 6'1", with a lean yet muscular frame. His complexion is fair and clear, and he usually keeps himself clean-shaven, though he occasionally sports a light stubble. His hair is thick and onyx black, often tousled in a way that seems effortless. Trent’s eyes are a striking hazel, with more green than brown, while his face is often quite impenetrable, his eyes can be his most expressive physical feature.
Outside of his school uniform – which, admittedly, he wears less often than expected – Trent favours a relaxed, casual style. He prefers plain black robes and cloaks, often pairing them with dark denim jeans and cotton long-sleeved shirts or simple t-shirts. He has no tattoos, piercings, or jewellery, aside from a watch on his left wrist.
Trent is aware that his natural facial expressions can come across as standoffish, or even intimidating, so he’s grown accustomed to offering a smile out of politeness. It’s not insincere, but it’s also not fully genuine—more a reflex than a true expression of affection. With his body language often closed off, this smile remains tight-lipped, and while it’s pleasant enough, it reveals little emotion. His authentic smile, however, is rare and typically reserved for when he feels at ease with someone. It’s warmer, accompanied by more relaxed body language, and often includes a quiet laugh. This true smile is wide, with slight dimples, and it softens his usually cool demeanour.
