A Breath of Fresh Air [Open to All]
The day started as every other day. Laguna found himself waking to the grumbling of his dorm-mates, rolled himself out of bed, and stumbled toward the common room. In his first and second years he thought he'd imagined the odd glances from housemates, but from third year on he was well aware that those were indeed odd glances from many of the other Gryffindor students. Not that every student in the common room stared; on the contrary, he found that the upperclassmen stared less than they used to, but that didn't stop the younger ones from their whispers about having a Lestrange among the ranks of their garnet and gold home away from home. Today was no different and he noted the questioning whispers of a group of first years in the corner. He ignored them. What did it matter if a bunch of 10 and 11 year olds thought he had a hidden dark mark under his sleeve? He exhaled deeply, muttering something as he passed the first years which only seemed to fuel their whispers. That was enough of the common room for today.
His morning proceeded to be about as normal as it could be. His first destination was the Great Hall where he ate a hearty breakfast. Luckily he'd beat most of the rest of the morning crowd so that he had some peace and quiet. After all, he'd never been much of a morning person. In fact, he preferred the dark of the night for his adventures, including late quidditch training sessions and unauthorized trips to the forbidden forest. He glanced around the room as more students began to enter and that was his cue to head to his first class. Charms. From there, the day seemed to fly by, taking him to different parts of the castle, engaging in conversations with various classmates, lunch, more classes, a quick trip to the common room to unwind, dinner, and finally...freedom.
The sun was setting when he'd finally gotten to his dorm to change into his quidditch practice robes and grabbed his broom. There was a quick moment stolen to glance at his reflection and run his fingers through his blonde hair and then he was off. The equipment would already be down at the pitch waiting and he'd take it over to the practice pitch to get some solid reps in before curfew...not that curfew had ever stopped him from sneaking around after hours before. There were a few small 'hellos' and a friendly smile to some of his fellow sixth years as he weaved through the students in the common room and then he was off. The walk was pleasant right up until he stepped on onto the grounds to find a group of Slytherin students huddled together.
Their snickers alone were an indication that they weren't going to allow him to get by without a word. His blue eyes scanned over the familiar faces. A couple he knew from family acquaintances, one he knew quite well and had been his first friend as a child, but even she wasn't going to stand up to the group for him. He understood why, of course. Still, it struck a nerve that these were people that were so closely aligned to his family and people that he'd likely always have some sort of business with whether he liked it or not.
"Oi! How's it feel to betray your own, Lestrange?" The taller of the boys sneered in Laguna's direction. "Mum and dad reckon it must be a huge embarrassment for your parents, yeah? Knowing their only son's broken tradition dating back to the beginning of the family tree...probably wondering where they went wrong." More snickering.
Laguna felt a jolt of adrenaline raging inside, his eyes narrowing on the ringleader. His free hand was balled up into a fist and everything in him was ready to jump on the Slytherin boy now. But then he thought about the consequences. Well, he thought about not being able to be out at his quidditch practices and missing out on matches over this idiot. He took a deep breath and, through furrowed eyebrows, marched by the group, fits of laughter erupting as he did so. One of these days he was going to teach them a lesson they'd never forget.
It didn't take long after being out of earshot for his anger to subside some. The cool air hit his cheeks, which helped the red coloration from his anger begin to fade away. He'd made it to the pitch and any anger that was left would be something he could take out while he was in the air. The young Gryffindor briefly took a dive into the locker rooms to gather equipment he'd need and then hoisted it out to the practice pitch, setting it all up toward the middle before letting himself fall back into a sitting position. This was his place of comfort, far from the taunts of his classmates, free from the hustle and bustle of students cramming to get last minute assignments done, just him and an open space to fly, and that was the best thing he could ever ask for.

"I don't know if you will enjoy knowing that you're so predictable that I knew I'd find you here or not."
Zeke strolled up to the pitch in his usual lackadaisical way, hands in his pockets, hair a tousled mess. While he couldn't possibly know what Laguna was going through, they were teammates. And for Zeke, that didn't end on the pitch. Synergy was highly important for teams to play well, and once you meant something to him, he'd done anything until you made it clear you didn't want him around. He stopped a little ways away from him, taking a deep breath and staring up into the sky.
"Can't blame you. Nothing a nice night out here can't fix," he mused before looking down at him, "What's on your mind?" he asked. He never asked the "Are you okay?" or "How are you?" kind of questions because he didn't think people really answered honestly. People tended to answer "I'm okay" quickly and with no real thought. But he'd ask something different every time, trip people up, make them think for a moment.
While he got plenty of flack and hate for being a muggle-born, he knew Laguna had his own pressures, things to do with family names and expectations. If people like those punks he'd seen going back in were friends of that family though, why would he want to live up to their expectations? It didn't seem like him to be that way. But as much as he thought he should just strike out on his own, he knew that was hard too. Zeke's own family hadn't been sure about him going here, they didn't know what he was getting into and it just didn't fit their worldview.
He blinked a couple of times, bringing him back to the moment. All they could do was charge forward, take life by the horns, and push it into the path they wanted to take. No one could do that for them, "Need a practice partner?" he asked.

It had been a long day for Quinn. In the potions lab that morning, her cauldron had exploded, making for quite the mess to clean up, and then of course she had to start her brewing over from scratch. By lunchtime, rumors were circulating that she'd carelessly added some ingredient or other, which had caused the explosion and sent two other students to the infirmary, and that one was now armless, and the other, blind. Fortunately, nobody had actually been injured, but she had had to explain what had really happened multiple times that afternoon, and she was already tired of it.
After a grueling History of Magic test (who cared about Goblin Rebellions, anyway?), she was eager to fly free and get some practice in. She stopped at her dorm only long enough to drop off her books and grab her old Firebolt--it was a second-hand broom, but it still performed solidly--and once outside, darted off in the direction of the Quidditch pitch.
Flying over the stands, she spotted some of her team already present on the ground, and descended toward them, coming to a hover as she drew close. "Hey guys, are you wanting to do some coordinated practice, or just one-on-one, or what? I still need to get changed, but will only need a minute."

He shouldn't have been surprised at the sound of Zeke's voice breaking the silence in the air, still it caught him a bit off guard. "Predictable...?" A little chuckle escaped, he never thought of himself as being predictable, yet here he was in the quidditch pitch day after day, especially after a bad day. Maybe he was more predictable than he liked to believe. Nothing wrong with having some consistency though. At least he knew he could count on this time at the end of most days to unwind. "You're right about that." Laguna inhaled the fresh air and turned his gaze from the sunset which painted the sky an array of beautiful colors to Zeke. "What's on my mind," Laguna started, hopping up to his feet now, "Is how we damn well better blow Slytherin away in our match against them. Sometimes I sure miss being a beater." Yes, nothing like sending a bludger barreling toward someone's head...er, moving on. "You know it," he responded at the offer of a practice partner.
Quinn descending down toward them was a bonus, he grinned in her direction. "We're getting started in just a moment if you are up for a challenge," Laguna decided maybe today was a good day to do some sort of alternative practice. He'd hate to be predictable, after all. His eyes shifted to Zeke and he smirked before looking back to Quinn. "We'll get warmed up while you get changed." By now the colors in the sky were beginning to fade into a deep purple as the sun was setting below the horizon and a new chill filled the air. Perfect, this would make their little session even more fun.
With that he began stretching out, eager to see where the evening might take him and his teammates. His eyes flashed toward a little box near the rest of the quidditch gear that adorned a raven. It had been a gift from his parents, primarily his mother was his guess. Then again, his father supported his endeavors with quidditch once he thought it would be beneficial, so maybe his father *had* in fact been involved in this particular case. No matter who had actually funded the gift, it had been one that he'd used multiple times on his own, and he'd waited for the right opportunity to use it for a night like this. Besides that, it was important to bond with teammates beyond the pitch. Drills and running plays was great, but there was more to flying and to quidditch than doing these things in isolation.

Zeke smirked a little, "Yes, I'm sure," he said, before looking towards Quinn as she appeared, "Ah fantastic," he said, giving her a wave, "Nothing like some night practice, right?" he smirked. He stretched his arms over his head as Laguna talked, almost like he was demonstrating the idea of "get warmed up", though it was mostly unintentional. He started to stretch out more, "We should insist they do the match at night, it seems to be your comfort zone," he taunted Laguna just a bit, looking over with his Cheshire grin, "Then again, they'd be more likely to pull some kind of crap," he said before switching to do a different stretch.
As much as he wanted to say that Quidditch was an equalizer of sorts, it still had moments where the rich got more perks than the poor. While he wasn't exactly poor, he couldn't afford the more expensive equipment. He was barely able to convince his father to get him the broom he had- the concepts of magic and the things of value in that world didn't make all that much sense to James. His father indulged him though and he was ever so grateful. Nothing had been quite so exhilarating as flying and playing the game, especially since he'd gotten his position of beater was well.... satisfying.
He stood up straight after a while, waiting until Quinn would join them again before asking, "What's the plan the, mon capitaine?" he asked, putting his hands on his sides

"Of course, I'm always up for a good challenge!", Quinn replied to Laguna. There was a reason she'd been sorted in Gryffindor. "If anything, it'll help me get my mind off what's been a pretty crummy day."
"Nighttime matches are the best," she agreed with Zeke. "You don't have to worry about the sun getting in your eyes once per lap...but it's slightly harder to tell who's on your team and who's not when you need to pass the quaffle, and delaying the pass by that extra second can make all the difference."
It only took a couple minutes for her to slip into the girls' changing room and get dressed in her Quidditch uniform. She donned her boots as well, if only because she didn't know whether any bludgers would be involved, and she wanted to avoid getting a broken ankle if she could. She might be a bit eccentric with her preference to forego footwear, but she wasn't irresponsible.
She returned to where her teammates were standing, with her broom balanced on one shoulder. Then she held up a small rectangular package in offering between the boys. "Peppermint gum, anyone?" It was some Muggle chewing gum, something she'd apparently brought from home. She looked to Laguna expectantly while blowing a bubble.

"Fun." Laguna said, his face seemingly a lot less tense since the arrival of his teammates in the pitch. His gaze shifted to Quinn sympathetically, he could relate to a pretty crummy day. But that part of the day was behind them and now the rest of the evening was theirs to seize! He nodded in agreement with both of his teammates take on night matches. "Nighttime matches are my favorite too, makes it even more fun to keep an eye out for the bludgers, yeah? Then again as a beater that can be an advantage."
He carried on his small talk with Zeke as Quinn got changed for practice. "Nothing like a little bit of flying outside of the pitch to train." He moved over to the small box he'd brought with him and popped it open. Inside, a little black raven was strapped into the box. Laguna undid the strap and then the tiny bird shot to life, eyes glowing an eerie, yet comforting (at least to Laguna) green color. "Ah, here we are," the bird flew circles around the boys before landing in Laguna's hand, as if waiting for the next set of instructions. "How about a race outside of the pitch? Through the grounds and the forest..." The little bird seemed to tilt its head as if taking notes as Laguna spoke. "Something that'll push us into uncomfortable spaces and make us quick to adjust...and something...exciting." The little raven seemed to excitedly bounce about, understanding the assignment perfect.
"Don't mind if I do," Laguna replied as Quinn rejoined them. He took her up on her offer of the gum and popped it into his mouth, a new boyish excitement on his face. "All ready?" The little raven certainly was. It flapped it's wings up into the air, it's quick movements similar to that of a snitch, but rather than just being a treasure to obtain, it would offer them a new way to race through the air without a set course. The miniature bird took off toward the castle and once it reached a spot it deemed appropriate, a green hoop glowed in the air. The bird continued on it's path, setting hoops in various locations and would continue even after the trio started flying, essentially creating a flying course that would require them to alter their flying and make instantaneous decisions.
That was the thing Laguna enjoyed most about his little training bird. It gave him a purpose in his flights, but enough spontaneity that it felt like a new adventure every time. There were plenty of times the little bird led him through waves of forest and he'd see all sorts of magical beasts, or to locations that he would otherwise never knew existed. It was how he grew to know the lands and sea around his family stronghold so well. The harsh conditions there only strengthened his skill. Tonight, he hoped that it would provide him and two of his teammates, essentially the closest 'friends' he had here, with an adventure that would last a lifetime.
With that, he mounted his sleek emerald and black broom (the little lion engraving glowing in the darkening sky at the handle), and kicked off into the air, the wind running through his golden locks. He leaned into the broom and suddenly he was soaring toward the first hoop the bird left in its path.
(We have two options here:
1. Each person can post a pathway of their choosing in their responses, including any events they want to initiate. We'll just need to make sure we are on the same page with when to transition.
2. We can just have Zeke and Quinn post a response and their kickoff to the flying session and I can roll the dice three times to initiate random locations/events on their flight.
Let me know what you'd prefer in the plotting channel!)

"Oh brilliant," Zeke said seeing Quinn with the gum, "Forgot to get some sent in the last batch of things," he thanked her as he took a piece, popping it in his mouth. He looked at Laguna as he got out the bird, "Such an interesting little device, I do wonder how they get it to work so well," he mused before it took off to set the course, "Well, those thoughts can wait for another time, can't they?" he said before he got onto his broom. It was just the standard make, though it was newer than the one he'd had before when his parents weren't keen on him playing the sport after he'd explained it to them. But realizing he wasn't giving it up, they felt the more sure the equipment was, the less likely he was going to possibly be maimed.
"If he hadn't taken off quite so fast, I was going to propose some stakes, but I suppose we'll just have to stick with just trying not to crash following the trail of a bird," he mused, kicking off the ground and once Quinn was airborne as well, he leaned forward and tried to catch up with their companion, curious to see what kind of trail had been created for them. He smirked a little at the fact it seem Laguna was trying to contradict the words he'd just used to greet him. Well, that was certainly fine, it made things much more interesting after all.

"Oooh, randomized waypoints! That's awesome!", Quinn said enthusiastically as their course was established by that curious raven. "That's so much better than manually placing markers in the air or on the ground." The flying instructor and the four house teams had each used their own systems, but each had its limitations. This was far superior.
She straddled her broom and kicked off without wasting any time, not wanting to needlessly handicap herself. As with other frequent fliers, having to say "up!" was one of the first crutches she'd learned to overcome--at some point they could all command their broom to activate wordlessly.
Quinn had customized her broom's appearance slightly, by engraving a phoenix feather into each side of the handle, but there wasn't any glowing effect yet. Maybe someday she'd charm the broom to have one, but she was content for now.

As if reading Zeke's mind, he turned back over his shoulder, "Last one in owes the others a butterbeer!" By this point the other two were nearly caught up to him. Up ahead the bird had left them a golden hoop, but they'd caught up to the hoop fairly quickly. Laguna steered his broom through and once he did (the others likely passing through pretty much at the same time) it glowed a green color before fading away, then another hoop appeared, though this hoop was hovering near the top of the owlery. It would require a sharp left turn and some maneuvering to reach the top quicker than the other two. Below the grounds were becoming more empty as students seemed to be returning to the common rooms, he noticed, only dipping the nose of the broom down so that he would have an easier time accelerating toward the top of the tower. One he'd dipped the nose, he pulled up and left as hard as he could, his grip tightening on the broom as he shifted his direction. Quinn would probably be good with this trek as she would already be accustomed to quick changes in direction...or he assumed so. He'd never actually played as a chaser, just studied it through practices and reading up on it. "Ought to challenge you at the very least," he called out toward Quinn. "Manually placing them can only simulate so much." This was much more similar to real play, the only difference was the space was much bigger than the pitch.
"Luna!" Suddenly a little pygmy owl swooped toward Laguna. It spread its wings and began gliding along with him. "Good evening, girl." He smiled. The owl had been his flight companion throughout his childhood back home. He found her as just a tiny owlet, stranded on the cliffs below the stronghold. She was hurt and the storms were rolling in, so he rescued her and looked after her until she'd healed. It took a few weeks but once she was healed, she chose to remain with him. Loyalty, as his father always said, was something to be valued, and if he was going to have a pet he was happy for it to be an owl like her. Luna dipped down below now. She was probably aware it was best to stay out of the way of the race.

Zeke gave a hoot of laughter at Laguna's call back, content with following for a moment as he tried to get a sense for what kind of course the bird might have set for them. He glanced back as the hoop turned green and gave a contemplative hum before looking ahead to the next. While being a beater didn't necessarily mean he needed to be able to make quick moves, he did like to stay out of the way of the bludger if it was coming at him at an angle he couldn't hit it back at. He leaned into the broom to try and get some speed to try and edge himself a bit more forward, before yanking the broom in the direction he wanted to go, though it looked like he turned early, he gave himself more time to make the turn more gradually than a hard turn, and he angled the broom at a way that it was almost akin to a car drifting (He'd played some interesting games over the summer), though it didn't equate quite right on a broom and he almost turned himself around backward. He gave a laugh as he righted himself, "Whoops!" he said before making his way through the hoop, probably at the back of the back, "I'm adding an addendum to the bet- only one butterbeer each! No altering the order when we finish!" he laughed again.
Seeing Luna, Zeke smirked. His own pet was one he'd found only after coming to Hogwarts. He was able to sneak her back home, but she was usually irritated by the end of summer after being cooped up in a room the whole time. He'd let her out during the day while his parents were gone to work, but when they were home or other people came over, she was stuck in his room. Willow had started off as a kind of bet in his first year, but now he treasured her and her appreciated her sense when it came to people. While on campus, she'd helped him to start focusing on people who were actual friends and not those who had ill intentions.
"Don't get distracted!" Zeke taunted and tried to get caught back up

Two butterbeers was a safe wager, well within the budget of the average sixth-year, Quinn decided. Even her own very limited budget. "You're on!", she called back to Laguna, confident enough in her well-honed flying skills that she wouldn't come in last place.
Spotting the next waypoint above the owlery, she hugged her broom and banked toward it, minimizing any temporary loss of speed. This was one of the few advantages of being petite: she had less inertia to fight against. It also helped that her broom was a well-cared-for firebolt, excellent at quickly accelerating. She was accustomed to turning on a dime and rocketing off in a new direction, something she had to do a lot of when playing Quidditch.
On her approach to the owlery, she noted several owls flying nearby, and she was careful to weave her way around a couple of them while maintaining a minimum safe distance. If she struck one of them, she'd never forgive herself. "Probably not the safest place to randomly put a waypoint," she muttered to herself, but it was unlkely the charm on that raven was clever enough to avoid dangerous situations like this. Once she had a clear path to the hoop, she summoned every ounce of speed she could squeeze out of her broom, taking advantage of the opportunity.

Laguna snickered at Zeke’s minor adjustment to the bet, he was good paying attention to little details like that. Then again, maybe those weren’t such minor details to other people. Laguna was very well fine if he bought a round for the entire team as his mother would make sure he had enough to support whatever his heart desired. But this was fair, and anyway he had other things he could be using that money for. Of the three he’d probably made the slowest turn, but his eyes were locked on the mark ahead and he was just a hair behind the others. As they sped in front of him he had to admire their unique flying styles. Zeke, well, that little maneuver was something he’d ask him about later as it was a flashy move and there was nothing wrong with showing off a little in the pitch. On the other hand, Quinn ability to be so precise with her movements gave her an edge on many of the other players and it was clear how she was able to speed down field often. They had a pretty solid team this year.
WHOOSH! WHOOSH! WHOOSH!
The trio zoomed through the marker one by one. The next marker wouldn’t be so easy to spot. The tiny raven had darted toward the cliffs housing the castle then dipped down by the waterfall. The waypoint was difficult to see given the mist that sprayed up from the waterfall, but there was a soft glow if they looked closely enough. Luckily over the summer Laguna had practiced religiously as seeker. And in this moment he felt the extra work paid off as his eyes caught the glimpse of the glow. His broom tilted down sharply and he dove sharply toward the bottom of the fall. Maybe not the path most would have chosen due to the fact there was going to be a terrible collision unless he could pull off some miraculous move. He hoped that would be the case, but who ever got better always taking the safe path anyway?

Zeke gave a grin as Quinn passed in front. It made sense in his mind for her to get ahead considering her position. He looked around trying to find the next hoop before he noted Laguna diving. Looking a bit confused, he tried to look in the direction Laguna was going before catching a glimpse, "There!" he called to Quinn, pointing towards the hoop before starting a descent himself. He wasn't trying to get all the way down like their teammate, but just trying to get close enough to be able to get the hoop. Mostly it was because he had zero desire to take another shower at this point, but that darned bird was certainly trying to make them work for it. He leaned in a bit more on the broom, trying to get to it first, pushing his broom as much as he could. He'd have to see if he could convince his parents to help him get some customizations- he'd read about them in Hogsmeade.
Zeke managed to get about level with the hoop but he couldn't help but look to see what kind of stunt Laguna was going to pull. For kicks and giggles, Zeke flipped himself upside down before going through the hoop, flipping back over as he started his upward ascent to get back away from the water. True his bottom half was wet, but he'd managed to avoid getting his hair wet. Nice.
"C'mon, Quinny! We gotta make Laggy boy put his money where his mouth is!" Zeke called back to her before letting out a "whoop" of a laugh.

This was very different from a Quidditch game, Quinn realized. In a game, she was always aware of the Quaffle's exact position. But the raven that was setting up this course was too small and too far away to track, especially while they had to keep their focus on one hoop at a time.
She did not spot the next ring on her own. After searching in vain for several seconds, she turned her attention to Laguna and Zeke just as the former darted off and the latter pointed and called to her. "Thanks, I see it now!", she called back to Zeke.
She'd deliberately slowed down after passing through the prior hoop in order to divert her attention to finding the next one without risk of colliding with anything, so it only took her a moment to change her vector and pick up speed now that she knew where it was.
Although she'd done some minor stunts so far in the race, she wasn't showing off--every move she made was deliberate, efficient. She wanted to win. Or at least, not come in last. With her target in sight, she leaned forward again and gained speed toward it, not far behind Laguna. "Right, we're not going down easy!", she concurred with Zeke.

He wasn't sure if he could actually pull off this maneuver, but he was going to try. As he reached the ring, water cascaded over him and he disappeared into the fall. Odds were that he was going to collide with the rocks behind the waterfall, but by some insane stroke of luck...or stupidity, he was able to shift the broom at the last moment and then he was spiraling up from the mist, hanging onto the broom just barely with his hands and soaked from his choice of path, but completely unharmed. "Maybe not my best choice..." He mumbled, fighting to get his legs back around the broom and steady himself.
Once he'd managed to solidify his position on the broom, he looked back to see how his teammates would approach the situation. "I can't wait for that butterbeer!" He shouted, "Somehow I feel it will taste even better knowing that one of you bought it." A confident smirk spread across his face at the very thought of coming out victorious. Even if his methods were not the most conventional. In his preoccupation with his teammates, he did not notice the next ring had already begun to form at the edge of the Forbidden Forest.

Seeing Laguna pull it off, Zeke gave another laugh, "Felt the need for a shower, Laggy?" he taunted, "Too bad it didn't want down that ego!" he said before glancing as he saw it materialize, "If I get to this one first, you two are going to owe me a favor to be collected at my discretion!" he said quickly before whipping his broom in the direction of the hoop. He leaned forward, not thinking about where it was going, too caught up in the moment and the competitive nature that came with these kinds of things. He was sure he could make it easy enough, it was just whether or not he could beat the two of them to it. His position wasn't one that necessarily needed speed straight up, but rather the ability to be agile and get to the quaffle. Hm. Maybe baiting them wasn't the best idea then. Oh well.

Quinn didn't want to risk hitting the rocks behind the waterfall, so her approach for this ring was to decelerate as she got close, only going through the ring at the best speed she felt she could safely get away with, or at least not break her neck. In the end, she only got a little wet in the process.
By some stroke of luck, she happened to spot the next ring by the forest fairly quickly. "Look, over there, past the whomping willow!", she called out to Zeke, gesturing for his benefit as she adjusted course and gunned it. With no obstacles to avoid, she squeezed every ounce of performance she could from her trusty broom.

"Completely refreshing!" He called out, laughing as the drops of water were now trailing behind him. "As if anything could ever water that down," and that was true. In his normal state, some might say he had a huge ego. He, of course, would just say that it was confidence in his own abilities and there was nothing wrong with being confident in yourself. It was a part of his personality that he felt was appreciated by most. And then it caused some eyerolls here and there from a few others, but there is no pleasing everyone.
Laguna cast a look in Zeke's direction, "A favor? What sort of favor?" He was too curious to wait around to find out, even if he knew Zeke wouldn't reveal it if he did have any ideas about it. In his curiosity, he didn't see the ring until Quinn pointed it out.
At that moment, he turned himself and started speeding in its direction, hoping that he'd somehow manage to beat out the other two in the final leg of the race. "May the best flyer win!" Despite the statement he knew that all three of them were very talented in their flight skills, but it sure would feel good to win.
