All Things Essential

Hogsmeade is only all-wizarding village in Britain, located just north of Hogwarts. Within walking distance from the castle, third-years and above are permitted weekend trips, and staff and Aurors have been known to live in the village when off-duty. In November 2005, the picturesque village was terrorized by a loose Boggart and its resulting fire.

All Things Essential

Post by Adeline Green »

Adeline walked around her shop as some locals pursued some art that was on display in her gallery- only one piece was hers this time, she thought with delight. More people were brave and sharing their work with the world! The thought made her heart soar. She looked back towards the guests and smiled brightly, the happiness of seeing people here and enjoying each other's work was just almost too much to bear.

After what happened here before and even with the Boggart attack not that long ago, she was afraid people would be too reserved or find that art just wasn't a necessity. But it was because of hardships that art was that much more important. To her, it was a way of taking control of one's emotions and getting them out of your system.

She took a deep breath before turning and going back to what she was doing, lugging a box of supplies over to some shelves. Luckily she'd known enough spells to put her shop back together after everything, but there wasn't much she could do about the lost wares. She'd had to eat the loss in her profits, but it was fine. She would be fine. She put the bottles of potion ingredients on the shelf, humming to herself. She stopped after a moment, realizing there was paint on her hands from where she'd been working on a piece earlier. She gave a little laugh to herself, knowing if it was on her hands, it was probably all over, including her face, which explained that slightly tight feeling on her forehead and cheeks.

She waved towards the guests that came in, a bright, clear bell sounding with the opening of the door. greeting them in her usual chipper tone, "Welcome to Enchanting Essentials! Let me know if there's anything I can do to help!" she said, the guests craning to see where her voice was coming from before waving back. She looked back to the shelves, continuing to hum. It didn't seem to be any actual tune, just some melody she was stringing together as she went.

Missy stepped inside Enchanting Essentials with a quiet, tentative air, the chime of the door ringing in the stillness of the room. She scanned the space with wide eyes, trying to find something that would give her a sense of direction. The vibrant colours and enchanting aromas surrounded her, but her heart felt heavy, the weight of the upcoming anniversary of her mother’s death pressing on her chest.

She had never been particularly crafty, never the type to pick up paintbrushes or clay, but something inside her had stirred. A desire to make something—anything—to keep as a small tribute. Perhaps it wasn’t about creating something perfect, but rather about the act of creating something in her mother's memory. After all, her mother had passed away so young, at only 27, and Missy was just a toddler. She had no memories of her, only stories and pictures, but that yearning to hold onto something of her was growing stronger with each passing year.

The idea of crafting something for her bedside table felt right. Something simple, something personal. She wasn’t sure what, but she knew she'd find it here. After all, Enchanting Essentials had a way of making even the most undecided person feel like they were meant to find what they needed.

As Missy walked further into the shop, her gaze landed on a small, hand-painted wooden box. It was plain but delicate, with intricate designs etched along the edges. She imagined herself decorating it—perhaps with dried flowers, or painting something that felt like a piece of her mother’s essence. She could keep it close, a little piece of art to remember her by.

Hoping to find something more fitting, she cleared her throat and looked towards Adeline, who was humming softly to herself while organizing her shelves. Missy hesitated for a moment before speaking up.

"Hi," she said softly, a little embarrassed by the wave of emotion that unexpectedly welled up in her chest. "I… I was wondering if you might have something simple to work with. I’m not very crafty, but I’m looking to make something special, a little memorial for my mum. She passed away when I was really little, and… well, the anniversary’s coming up. I don’t know where to start, but I feel like I need to do something."

She looked down at her hands, unsure whether she’d said enough. But the need to create, to memorialize, was strong in her now. She was hoping Adeline might have just the thing to guide her.

Adeline jumped a little in surprise, giving a little laugh at herself for getting distracted before looking at Missy.

She gave a hum of thought at what Missy presented her, "I totally get that, I've seen all kind of ways to commemorate our lost loved ones around the world," she smiled softly, putting her hand lightly on Missy's shoulder before moved to set down the stock she had in her hands, "As for where to start, that could depend on a few things. Do you follow any kind of religion? That could help with a base to it."

"Are you trying to set up the memorial in the dorm rooms?" Mera asked from where she was sitting not terribly far away, a textbook in front of her, "You'll need something small that can sit on the nightstand then, that way it's not in a space most people are going to mess with it," she murmured.

"Aww, look at you being helpful," Addie said, getting a bombastic side-eye from Mera, before she addressed Missy again, "She has a point. We do have some small boxes and such over here," she said and moved to the part of the store that had some boxes that might be useful as a base for something, that she could also close and keep safe.

Missy let out a small, appreciative breath as Adeline placed a gentle hand on her shoulder. She hadn’t really expected warmth, but now that she had it, she felt a little less like she was fumbling through something too big for her hands to hold.

At Adeline’s question about religion, she hesitated. “Not really,” she admitted, shifting slightly. “I mean, I’ve thought about it, but I guess I just want something… personal. Something that feels like her, even if I didn’t really get to know her.” She swallowed, feeling an odd sort of embarrassment creeping in. It wasn’t easy talking about someone who felt more like an idea than a real person.

She turned as another voice chimed in—Mera, sitting nearby with a book in front of her. Missy blinked at the suggestion, nodding slightly. “Yeah… I think I’d want to keep it small. Just something I can keep by my bed, where it won’t be in the way.” It was oddly comforting that someone else was thinking about the practical side of things.

Missy let out a small laugh at Adeline and Mera’s exchange before following Adeline to where the small boxes were displayed. She reached out, running her fingers lightly over one of the lids. “These are perfect,” she murmured, tracing the smooth wood. “I could paint one, maybe add something inside.” Her voice was quieter now, thoughtful.

She glanced up at Adeline, feeling a bit more sure of herself. “Do you have any suggestions? I don’t really know what I’m doing, but I want to do it right.”
